Yesterday and today, my Sr. TAKS Classes really came out winning. First in my 1st Period Class, the Pre-Test Scores for the Cell Structure lecture of the five Seniors who took it were, 10, 30, 30, 40, and 70. Their Post-Test Scores were 100, 100, 100, 100, and 80 respectively. In 5th Period Class, the Pre-Test Scores were 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50. Their Post-Test Scores were 100, 90, 100, 100, and 90. I am so pleased to so that their scores increased significantly. It is awesome when these students can experience that kind of success!
Today, they took that information to the lab and I asked them to look at specific slides representing Muscle, Duodenum, Heart, Blood, and Skin. I asked them, "Which of the five would have more Mitochondria? Why?" 100% of them said muscle because it is always moving and it needs alot of energy so that means more ATP and that means more Mitochondria....with that answer they hit a Home Run Out of the Park! I then asked them, "Which two of the five would have more Ribosomes and Golgi Apparatus?" 90% said it would be the Skin and Muscle. They hit a Triple with that one. I use the analogies of Single to mean 70%, Double to mean 80%, Triple to mean 90% and Home Run Out of the Park to mean 100%. The Principal says this is a very clever way of giving Evaluations because the kids can connect with it.
